Moving to Alsace

If you are thinking of moving to Alsace you have to know that it is the seventh most populated region in France. The city is situated at the eastern border of France adjacent to Switzerland and Germany. It is on the west bank of the upper Rhine River
Alsace is being administered independently within the Republic of France as a result of the influence wars, historical decisions and strategic politics have had on the city. The largest city of Alsace is named Strasbourg and it is a cultural and economic capital. Alsace is one of the two important regions in the European Union politically because it is the home of multiple international bodies and organisations.
The name has its roots in Old-High Germany and its meaning is foreign domain. The region was part of the Holy Roman Empire and it slowly got annexed to France in the 18th century. Later on it was formalised as one of the provinces of France.
The republic of Mulhouse had become part of Alsace after its citizens voted on it in 1798. The city was often mentioned as part of Lorraine. Lorraine had parts of which had changed control from Germany to France four times already.
In the past, the official language of Alsace was Alsatian but in this day and age most of the inhabitants speak France.
When moving to Alsace you will realise that the city has numerous picturesque villages along with castles and churches, giving the town a characteristic charm and a pleasant atmosphere. Although the city sustained major damage during the wars between France and Germany it still retains the beauty of its three main towns and its architectural structures.
Some other things that Alsace is well-known for are its vineyards and the green and dense forest along with beautiful lakes.
Alsace has several smaller villages and cities which you can move to, such as Berheim, Ferrete, Rosheim and other which together with the gardens of the blue house in Uttenhoffen display a wonderful example of picturesque beauty.
There are also several significant locations that you must not miss if you’re there, for example the churches Marmoutier and Thannn, along with some of the grand castles Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, Ramstein and Wasenbourg.
Other famous points of interest are the Open air museum in Ungersheim and the historical museum in Haguenau. The city is also home to one of the oldest public libraries in the word called Bibliothèque humaniste situated in Selestat and there are Christmas markets in Kaysersberg Mulhouse, Colmar and Strasbourg.
When in the mood for some nature bonding you can visit the Alsace Wine Route and the national park named Parc naturel des Vosges du Nord along with the Parc natures regional des Ballons des Vosges which is a regional park situated just south of Vosges.

Moving to Nord-Pas-de-Calais

Nord-Pas-de-Calais or just plain Nord is another one of the many regions of France. Nord-Pas-de-Calais is composed of the Pas-de-Calais and the departments of Nord and the region borders Belgium and UK. Although now Nord-Pas-de-Calais is part of France, before 1477 the region was part of the Southern Netherlands. The Nord-Pas-de-Calais gradually become part of France between 1477 and 1678. Nord-Pas-de-Calais has several historical provinces such as Boulonnais, Cambraisis, French Hainaut, Calaisis, Artois and French Flanders along with other parts of northern Picardy. There is also the Minidn Basin which regional name is even now used as a sign of civic pride for the inhabitants of Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Wikipedia mentions that “With its 330.8 people per km2 on just over 12,414 km2, it is a densely populated region, having some 4.1 million inhabitants—seven percent of France’s total population, making it the fourth most populous region in the country—83% of whom live in urban communities. Its administrative centre and largest city is Lille. The second largest city is Calais, which serves as a major continental economic/transportation hub with Dover of Great Britain 42 kilometres (26 mi) away; the White Cliffs of Dover are visible from Calais on a clear day. Other major towns include Valenciennes, Lens, Douai, Béthune, Dunkirk, Maubeuge, Boulogne, Arras, Cambrai and Saint-Omer.” As a result we can say that Nord-Pas-de-Calais it’s quite highly populated of an area.
Another thing you should know if you ever want to move to Nord-Pas-de-Calais is that the regions official language is French but it also has two smaller communities which have their specific languages, namely the Flemings which talk West Flemish that is a Dutch dialect and the Picard which speak the Picard language. There are several areas around Nord-Pas-de-Calais that recognize both these languages such as Belgium and a couple of city-level governments.
If you decide to move to Nord-Pas-de-Calais it is always best to remember these details and figure out which part you want to move to.

Moving to Languedoc-Roussillon

Another one of the 27 regions of France is called Languedoc-Roussillon and it is comprised of five departments. The region borders the other regions appertaining to France, namely the regions of Auvergne, Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Midi-Pyrénées on one of the sides and on the other side it borders Spain and Andorra and as well the Mediterranean Sea. The region called Languedoc-Roussillon in located in the southern part of mainland France.
The language spoken in Languedoc was Occitan until the 20th century and in Roussillon it was Catalan. In these last years, serious efforts have been done to revive these languages though something known as the La Bressola schools, which are “a cultural association founded in Perpignan, France in 1976 to promote a network of community-run schools engaged in Catalan language immersion programs in France, particularly in the comarques of so-called North Catalonia.”(Wikipedia)
Specific to this region there is the Occitan literature as well as the troubadour composition which is thought to have originated here. The Occitan literature refers to a body of text written in Southern France and its original form is XI and XII century poetry. In the music area, some major influences were Giraut de Bornelh, Bertran de Born and Aimeric de Peguilhan in the High Middle Ages. Another famous composer Déodat de Séverac was born here and when he composed music, he incorporated indigenous music of the area.
Many wants to move to the Languedoc-Roussillon region for its beautiful sceneries and peaceful surroundings, if you are the same then don’t hesitate anymore and relocate to Languedoc-Roussillon.

Moving to Haute-Normandie

Haute Normandie also known as Upper Normandy was created in 1984 by uniting 2 departments, namely Eure and Sein-Maritime, thus forming one of the 27 regions of France. The splitting of Normandy into Upper and Lower Normandy has always been the cause of many controversies over the years and there were many who wanted the re-unification of the two. The name Haute-Normandie i actually older, being first used before 1956 to refer to areas now included in the administrative region, those being the Roumois, the Pays de Bray (not that of Picardy), the Pays de Caux, the Plaine de Saint André, the Campagne of Le Neubourg and the Norman Vexin. Even today a great area of Pays d’Auge is situated in Lower Normandie along with a small part of Pays d’Ouche.
The capital city of Lower Normandie is Rouen which stands out due to its beautiful buildings and churches. This is where the tallest cathedral in France can be found. The most populated city in Upper Normandy is Le Havre. Upper Normandie is considered to be twinned with the Borough of Redbridge in London, England and its economy is concentrated on petrochemicals, tourism, industry and agriculture.
Rouen (French pronunciation: [ʁwɑ̃]), in northern France on the River Seine, is the capital of the Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy) region and the historic capital city of Normandy. Once one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe, it was the seat of the Exchequer of Normandy in the Middle Ages. It was one of the capitals of the Anglo-Norman dynasties, which ruled both England and large parts of modern France from the 11th to the 15th centuries. It was here that Joan of Arc was executed in 1431. People from Rouen are called Rouennais.”(Wikipedia)
There are many things to be seen in Upper Normandy, out of which some of the most famous ones are the Evreux Cathedral which encompasses a late gothic flamboyant style with a high gothic rayonnant style; then there is the town centre of Le Havre which was destroyed at the end of the II World War and of course Le Havre was the cradle of impressionism as it was where Claude Monet painted “Impressions, sun rising”.
Overall there are many things to see and do in Upper Normandy, so if you ever get the chance to move to Haute Normandie don’t miss it! Forget about all those small details as packing for the move or stressing about it. Trust us to help you move to Upper Normandy!

Moving to France Beware of Local Traditions

Moving to France Beware of Local Traditions

If you are one of the many Britons who are thinking of moving to France to begin a new life, the chances are you will have already spent many years taking holidays there. This is usually how people form an attachment to a particular town or region, but before you rush headlong into buying a property there are some important factors you should take into account before moving to France. We have to be realistic about this, because there have been many stories of people leaving Britain to set up a new home in a rural idyll only to find that the reality can be very different to the dream.

Ten years ago, a friend of mine moved with his family to the Limousine region and was initially delighted by the reception they received from the locals. Everyone was very friendly, to the extent that when my friend mentioned he was carrying out some building work on the property he had bought his new friends immediately offered their help. The thing is, a couple of weeks later when he was relaxing in the afternoon sun, his neighbour arrived at the front door and demanded  that he come and help with some work at his home.

You could argue that this kind of thing will happen if you were planning on moving to Holland or moving to Germany, but apparently this is the local tradition in Limousine. If someone does you a favour, they can demand ‘repayment’ at anytime, so be warned!

Moving to French Guiana

What is known officially as Guiana in France and by others as French Guiana is a beautiful region of France that is located on the northern side of the Atlantic. Guiana is an overseas department belonging to France which borders Suriname in West and Brazil in the East and South. French Guiana has a rather small population density for its 83,534 km2 meaning that there is a rate of 3 people per km The name derives from colonial times when The Guianas were colonies spread across the world. The French was added to the name Guiana as to distinguish it from the other colonies, such as Dutch Guiana which is now called Suriname, Spanish Guiana now named Guayana Region, and British Guiana now simply named Guyana and others as such. The French Guiana is collectively referred under the name of the Guianas along with the north and west larger countries Together they compose the large shield landmass which is one of the free craters found in the South America Plate.
Although not that populated, French Guiana is still thriving economically just by having the Guiana Space Centre, the French and European spaceport, which is used as the primary lunch site of the European Space Agency near the equator.
French Guyana also has many important ecosystems that they take care of and it’s quite well known for its tropical rainforest, inselbergs, wetlands and even savannahs. The high level of biodiversity that French Guiana has is an important part in its history and present time altogether. The European Union together with the International Union for Conservation of Nature have placed extraordinary effort in protecting the areas known as biodiversity hotpots together with various nature reserves and the Guiana Amazonian park, the old growth forests along with their fauna and flora will be preserved and protected for many years to come.
You can even say that French Guiana is a little piece of paradise, a pleasurable place that is closest to the natural way of life. So if you enjoy what it can offer, don’t hesitate to move to French Guiana.

Moving to Franche-Comté

Freedom is the name of the game in Franche-Comté, as evidenced by the English translation of the name of this province, which literally means “Free County”. From an administrative point of view it is a long-standing province in the eastern half of France, encompassing the departments of Doubs, Jura, Haute-Saône, and Territoire de Belfort. Covering an area of over 16,000 square kilometres, this administrative province known in the past as the Free County of Burgundy is home to a population of about 1,168,208 people (as per a 2009 estimate), concentrated mainly in such urban areas as Montbéliard, Belfort, and Besançon. In fact, the latter also constitutes the capital city, closely followed in terms of size and development by the other two above-mentioned cities. Among other urban establishments of note it’s worth mentioning Dole – which was actually the historical capital of the province up until the end of the 17th century, Vesoul, Arbois – famous for its wine-making – and Lons-le-Saunier.
Historically, the region has been inhabited since literally forever, but it didn’t reach its current shape and gain its actual name of Franche Comté until 1366. Possibly the most interesting aspect of its history was the fact that its economic life relied heavily on serfs and, as such, it ended up being one of the last parts of France to abolish serfdom, which only happened in 1787.
In terms of geography, landscape and culture, Franche Comté has quite a lot in common both with the neighbouring French provinces of Rhône-Alpes, Burgundy, Champagne-Ardenne, Lorraine and Alsace, and with its eastern neighbour, Switzerland. The most striking feature of the landscape is the Jura mountains which, while dwarfed by the nearby Alps, are still attractive to locals and tourists alike due to the fact that they are easier to reach and they provide a wide array of places to ski or hike. The rural landscape that is predominant in this province is a genuine treasure of picturesque views, including such rare feats as the timber houses in the Doubs and Loue valleys, built upon wooden stilts in the actual river, and the renowned Région des Lacs, an area of tiny villages spread between spectacular gorges and waterfalls. Other points of interest are the famous “yellow wine”, as well as the wide array of delicious-sounding and definitely delicious-tasting cheeses, such as Cancoillotte, Comté, Metton, or Munster, to name but a few.

Moving to Guadeloupe

Located in the Leeward Islands is the Caribbean island called Guadeloupe. The island stands in the Lesser Antilles and has a area of about 1,628 km2 with a number around 400,000 of inhabitants. The island is considered as an oversea region of France and it is an essential part of France. Guadeloupe encompasses other smaller sized islands such as Marie-Gallante, the Iles des Saintes and La Desirade.
The island known under the name of Guadeloupe is part of the Eurozone and the European Union as well. As a result the currency used currently on the island is the euro. Although the island is an oversea department of France, it is not yet included in the Schengen Area. The prefecture of the region is Basse-Terre and the official language spoken there is French. Nevertheless many of the people living there are able to speak Antillean Creole.
When talking about the Guadeloupe Island, many will fondly remember the literary achievements that island inhabitants portrayed over a long period of time. One of the most well-known such achievement is the poetry that Saint-John Perse wrote during his lifetime. Saint-John Perse was a pseudonym that Alexis Leger used for his creations. The biggest achievement of this great man was considered to be when he won the Nobel Prize in Literature back in 1960 for “the soaring flight and the evocative images of his poetry, which, in a visionary fashion, reflects the conditions of our time.”
The great minds that were found on such a secluded area has amazed many people but it’s literary output is even today recognised and continued by many journalist, essayists, poets and even novelists. Such names as Simone Schawartz-Bart, Mayse Conde and M. Ernest Pepin are only a few of the great talents that have risen from the shores of Guadeloupe.
Along with the various literary talents, the people of Guadeloupe are also well known for their dances and music. The combination of French, Indian and African styles have created some unique forms that are specific to the Guadeloupe region, such as the dance styles named zouk-love, zouk and kompa but also hip-hop and other modern dances.
If you think you could enjoy such a variety of cultures and that you will fit in, don’t hesitate to move to Guadeloupe. A new adventure filled with different sounds, smells and moves waits for you! Leave the worrying for us and don’t concern yourself with small details.

Moving to Limousin

Despite its decidedly small size, the French region of Limousin is as charming, delightful and relaxing as the name suggests, even though it might not represent the kind of luxury that limousines – as in motor vehicles – have come to suggest. It is composed of three departments, each with its own capital, extending over a landscape that varies in height between 200 meters and 1000 meters. Such mountainous scenery also explains why this little province is home to a famous breed of beef cattle as well as an attraction point for hiking enthusiasts. At 977 m, Mont Bessou, towering over the town of Ussel in Corrèze, one of the three departments, is the maximum altitude reached in Limousin, as well as the tallest peak in the Plateau de Millevaches, which literally translates as “Plateau of Thousands of Cows”.
The most important urban agglomeration in this region is concentrated around the town of Limoges, capital to the Haute-Vienne department. It is home to about 300,000 people, half of which actually live in the city and the other half in the areas around it. This is also where most employment opportunities and professionals converge – understandable given how sparse the population is in the rest of the region. Those who do live there are an interesting mix of French people, generally locals, and British and Dutch immigrants who came here seeking – and arguably finding – a place of rest and quiet. Other urban settlements of note are the town of Guéret, capital to the third department, Creuse, Brive la Gaillarde, second largest city in Limousine, inhabited by roughly fifty thousand residents, as well as Tulle and Aubusson, miniature towns that still retain the charm of rural markets.
Those with an interest in history would also find plenty of attractions in Limousine, in particular in Limoges, which was first established as a city by the Romans. Its location between Paris and Toulouse has led to it becoming a famous artistic and cultural landmark in the region, gaining fame as early as during the Middle Ages. Much later, around the XIX century, both its notoriety and its economic development were due to their manufacturing of high-quality porcelain, a product that is indeed as luxe as the renowned limousine motor vehicles.
