Bremen is located in north-western Germany, on the river Weser,just 60km away from the North Sea. Together with Bremerhaven, the city forms Germany’s smallest state.
Back in the 13th – 17th centuries, the city was part of the Hanseatic League,and remainsto this day one of Germany’s most important commercial cities, with a well-developed industry and transport infrastructure.
The Town Hall of Bremen was included in the patrimony of the UNESCO World Heritage List, thanks to its imposing architecture that makes it one of Europe’s finest buildings. Built at the beginning of the 15th century, the Rathaus, as its German name goes, is considered an important symbol of the prosperity and influence of the city.
The statue of Roland, the protector of trade, can be admired in the main square of the city. Along with the Town Hall, Roland’s statue (which was erected in every city member of the Hanseatic League) is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
St Peter’s Cathedral was erected in the 13th century and dominates the main square of the city with its impressive structure and fine sculptures.
In the north of the city, the Universum Bremen is a dynamic science centre, an expression of the flourishing industries of high-tech and science.
The Schlachte, along the Weser River and the Viertel, located south of Kunsthalle are two popular areas dotted with pubs and cafes, where you can spend your time. Bremen is the home of the world famous Beck’s beer, so here you can have a sip of this delicious beverage in its homeland.
Some rather interesting events that take place in Bremen are the International Bremen Summer, a circus festival called LA STRADA, the ‘Vision Parade’, which is a techno parade along the Wesser River that takes place every June, the Free Market in October, and the Christmas Market in December.
