Another one of the 27 regions of France is called Languedoc-Roussillon and it is comprised of five departments. The region borders the other regions appertaining to France, namely the regions of Auvergne, Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Midi-Pyrénées on one of the sides and on the other side it borders Spain and Andorra and as well the Mediterranean Sea. The region called Languedoc-Roussillon in located in the southern part of mainland France.
The language spoken in Languedoc was Occitan until the 20th century and in Roussillon it was Catalan. In these last years, serious efforts have been done to revive these languages though something known as the La Bressola schools, which are “a cultural association founded in Perpignan, France in 1976 to promote a network of community-run schools engaged in Catalan language immersion programs in France, particularly in the comarques of so-called North Catalonia.”(Wikipedia)
Specific to this region there is the Occitan literature as well as the troubadour composition which is thought to have originated here. The Occitan literature refers to a body of text written in Southern France and its original form is XI and XII century poetry. In the music area, some major influences were Giraut de Bornelh, Bertran de Born and Aimeric de Peguilhan in the High Middle Ages. Another famous composer Déodat de Séverac was born here and when he composed music, he incorporated indigenous music of the area.
