Removals to Wuppertal

The German city of Wuppertal might be most famous for its monorail or “floating tram”, but it should be equally recognized for giving the whole world two of the most widely used products of today, namely the drug commonly known as Aspirin and the equally common household appliance known as the Kobold vacuum cleaner. In fact, the company that patented Aspirin has survived to this day, and is currently a huge pharmaceutical company, Bayer AG.

The city itself, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, cradled in the valley of the Wupper River, is no less impressive in size, counting about 350 thousand inhabitants and standing as the biggest urban settlement in the Bergisches Land. It is an incredibly green city, so rich in parks and woodlands that such green areas actually constitute approximately two-thirds of its total area. Which makes it very easy for anyone looking for a short respite from the world of concrete to reach any of the said green areas, as, from any point in the city, a park or woodland alley is only minutes away.

Surprisingly enough, though, the city also remains an important industrial unit, with companies operating in the field of metallurgy, textiles, electronics, printing equipment, and pharmaceuticals, among others. It is also home to institutes and institutions of note, such as the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, the University of Wuppertal, famous for being the second German university to receive a supercomputer (the ALiCEnext), and the European Institute for International Economic Relations.

The city provides both visitors and inhabitants with numerous attractions, ranging from technological wonders that are more than one hundred years old, to its 4500 buildings classified as national monuments, to famous cultural highlights such as museums and concert halls. Also worth mentioning are the municipal botanical garden and the extensive Burgholz arboretum, the city Zoo, an attractively landscaped park inhabited by over 4500 animals from all corners of the world, the XVIII century museum house dedicated to Friedrich Engels, a sculpture park, a dance theatre, as well as the Stadthalle concert hall, remarkable for both its architecture and its excellent acoustics. Last, but not least, is the suspended monorail that was set up in 1901 and still functions today, unparalleled in the whole world.

Removals to DUISBURG- Removals to Germany from UK

Moving to Duisburg

Located in the western part of the German state of North Rihne-Westphalia, Duisburg is part of the Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf metropolitan area, along with the larger city of Düsseldorf. Thanks to its excellent positioning, access to the world’s largest in-land harbor, and proximity to a major international airport, the city is a commercial and industrial hub known primarily for its steelworks.
Duisburg has a population of close to 490,000 inhabitants, and ranks as the fifteenth most populous city in the country. Over time, the settlement absorbed numerous smaller towns in the surrounding area, resulting in today’s sprawling urban development.
As a major center of the Ruhr coal mining and steelmaking area, Duisburg’s development has been closely related to heavy industry. While in the recent decades, the contribution of mining and steelmaking to the local economy has decreased, the city is still home to the last remaining blast furnaces in the Ruhr region. According to the most recent statistics, almost half of all hot metal in Germany and one third of all pig-iron is processed in Duisburg.
But Duisburg is known for more than just heavy industry. The renowned Konig Pilsener beer is produced at a large brewery outside of Duisburg, and the town is also home to a university that enrolls close to 40,000 students, ranking in the top ten universities in the country.
The city’s cultural life centers around the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, one of the most prominent German institutions of its kind, and the philharmonic orchestra that regularly tours Europe.
Duisburg’s architectural patrimony includes various landmarks, from the Inland Waterways Museum, to the 1,100-year old St Johann the Baptist church, and the modernist Micro-Electronic-Centrum. Urban explorers should be happy to learn about the Landschaftspark, a former industrial complex that is now open for visiting. For shopping and promenade, Duisburg’s residents prefer the city center and its main commercial street, the so-called “fountain mile”, as well as the city’s parks and botanical garden.

Removals to KREFELD- Removals to Germany from UK

Moving to Krefeld

Krefeld, also called the “Velvet and Silk City”, is a German city situated in North Rhine-Westphalia, to the northwest of Düsseldorf.
The city was founded by the Roman legions from the military camp of Gelduba. It was documentary attested for the first time in 1105 and named Krinvelde. Uerdingen, a district of the city of Krefeld, was initially attested as a city in 1255, being more important than Krefeld.
Krefeld started to develop in the 17th century, but it suffered the horrors of the Thirty Years War.
In 1683 due to overpopulation, thirteen families (Quakers and Mennonites) members of different religious movements left Krefeld and crossed the Atlantic to the New World. Over time, the various dialects spoken by these immigrants fused into a unique dialect known as Pennsylvania Dutch or Pennsylvania German. The Pennsylvania German ethnic identity was set in Germantown (now incorporated in Philadelphia).
Unlike Krefeld, Uerdingen was less fortunate being completely destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War by troops from Hesse and almost ceased to exist.
Krefeld passed to the Kingdom of Prussia (a German kingdom between 1701 and 1918) after the death of William III of Orange in 1702. In 1758 took place the Battle of Krefeld between a Prussian-Hanoverian army and a French army, during the Seven Years’ War.
In 1815 Krefeld and Uerdingen were included in the Prussian Province of Jülich-Cleves-Berg which became in1822 the Rhine Province) the westernmost province of the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1872 Krefeld was an independent city in Rhenish Prussia. During the occupation of the Rhineland in the First World War Krefeld became the base of the Belgian Army. In 1929 Krefeld and Uerdingen merged to form Krefeld-Uerdingen and in 1940 the name was shortened to simply Krefeld. After World War II the town became part of the new state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Removals to GELSENKIRCHEN- Removals to Germany from UK

Moving to Gelsenkirchen

Gelsenkirchen is a German city situated in North Rhine-Westphalia and having a population of about 267,000 inhabitants.
Historically mentioned for the first time in 1150 as a small village, Gelsenkirchen owes its development to the Industrial Revolution, mainly coal mining. Its population grew therefore from 6000 in 1840 (when exploitation of coal started) to 138,000 in 1900.
In 1928, by associating Gelsenkirchen with cities of Buer and Horst (de), the city Gelsenkirchen-Buer was born, resuming the name Gelsenkirchen in 1930.
Surnamed the “city of a thousand fires”, due to the flames of mine gasses flashing at night, Gelsenkirchen was considered to be the most important coal mining town at the beginning of 20th century.
During World War II Gelsenkirchen, as a coal mining and oil refining center, was the bombing target of the Allied. It also hosted a women’s subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
Today all collieries disappeared and Gelsenkirchen became a center of solar technology where can be found Germany’s largest solar power plant. Companies such as Shell Solar Deutschland GmbH and . Scheuten Solar Technology are involved in this area, producing solar cells and solar panels. Other important business companies in Gelsenkirchen are: TreuHandStelle, Gelsenwasser e.on, BP Gelsenkirchen GmbH, Pilkington.
Gelsenkirchen is considered by Bertelsmann Foundation one of the business-friendliest German cities (after Leipzig, Karlsruhe and Bremen). It also hosts the football club Schalke 04 and a zoo established in 1949.

Removals to Essen- Removals to Germany from UK

Moving to Essen

Located in the heart of the coal and steelmaking area of Ruhr, part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Essen is Germany’s ninth most populous city, at 570,000 inhabitants.
Historians believe Essen was founded around the year 845, but the city began to develop tremendously at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, when many coal mines and steel works opened in the Ruhr region. Essen’s name is tied to that of the Krupp family, owners of the steelworks of the same name. Since the seventies, the coal and steel industry has been declining, taking its toll on the city’s population, which dropped from 730,000 inhabitants in the early sixties.
Essen is also a center of culture, and, as a recognition of its role, it was designated the European Capital of Culture along with the other regions of the Ruhr urban area. Since 1958, the Catholic diocese of Ruhr is located in the city and the merged university of Duisburg-Essen has a campus and a university hospital here.
A testimony to the city’s coal mining legacy, Essen’s foremost landmark is the Zollverein Industrial Complex, a former coal mine and coke complex that closed down in the nineties. The winding tower siting at the top of the coal mine’s main shaft, built in the distinctive Bauhaus style, is considered the city’s symbol, a masterpiece that was inducted in the UNESCO World Heritage Site patrimony.
The complex was long neglected, but in recent years, the local authorities have acted to preserve and redevelop the area. Currently, several art and design studios work within the old industrial complex, and there’s hope that more will follow in the future. The complex is freely accessible and paid tours are frequently organized. The highlights of the tours are the Red Dot Design Museum and the Ruhrmuseum, dedicated to the history of the region, which functions since 2010 in a former coal-washing factory.
