Moving to Augsburg

Augsburg, the third oldest city in Germany after Neuss and Trier, is placed in the south-west of the free state of Bavaria. With a population of more than 264,000 inhabitants, Augsburg is the third largest city in Bavaria.
The city of Augsburg is home to the administrative district of Schwaben and to the institutions of the Augsburg County, in German Landkreis Augsburg. As a university town, the majority of Augsburg’s population works or studies at the city’s university.
Augsburg is the sole German city with its own law-protected holiday, the Augsburger Hohes Friedensfest, (the Peace Fest of Augsburg). Originally, the holiday was a commemoration of Ferdinand II’s decision to prohibit the protestant religion. Over the years, the holiday became a celebration of peaceful coexistence. The festival begins on the 8th of August and lastsfor three weeks.
Augsburg was home to the Fugger and the Welsser patrician families, who accumulated so much wealth, that they replaced the Medicis as Europe’s most important bankers. The former residence of the Fugger family was restored and is opened to the public.
Some of the most interesting edifices in Augsburg are the Cathedral, erected in the 9th century, the Town Hall which was built in 1620 in the Renaissance style, as well as one of the synagogues that survived the war. A Jewish museum is housed inside the walls of the synagogue.
The memorial house of Bertolt Brecht and the house where Mozart lived his childhood are also located in Augsburg.
Augsburg’s impressive art museum is housed in a Rococo mansion dating from 1756 called the Schaezlerpalais. Other museums are the Walter Art Museum, the Maximilian Museum, and the Roman Museum, which is housed in the old building of St. Margaret Monastery.
Three lovely fountains, built in the Baroque style, as well as the Botanical Gardens await you to stop by for a moment of relaxation.
Fans of rafting can take a ride down the Eiskanal, the world’s first artificial white-water rafting course, built in the 70s for the Munich Olympic Games.

Moving to Wiesbaden

Located in the southwestern part of Germany, in the heart of the metropolitan area Frankfurt Rhine Main Region, Wiesbaden is the capital city of the federal state of Hesse. It has a population of about 280,000 inhabitants, with another 10,000 American military personnel living in the city.
The city of the ‘meadow baths’, as its name goes, is known worldwide as a spa town, thanks to the fourteen hot springs that flow on the territory of Wiesbaden.
Established back in 1896, the International May Festival is presented by the Wiesbaden Hessischestheater and is one of the most famous festivals in the world. From concerts to opera and musicals, from ballets to modern dance, from plays to artistic circus acts, the festival showcases all kinds of performances.
With a tradition of over 30 years, the Rheingau Wine Festival takes place in August in the centre of the city, near the Wiesbaden City Hall. The visitors can enjoy the famous Rheingau Riesling and other specialities of wines, while listening to some good music.
From the end of November to December 23, the Schlossplatz Square dresses up for Holiday. It is time for the so called ‘Twinkling Star’ Market, when the centre of the city is illuminated in golden and blue. Four gates in the form of lilies are placed at the market entrance. The main attraction is the 28 metre Christmas tree, decorated with no fewer than 2500 electric bulbs, 30 flash bulbs, and 1000 blue and golden ties. Nearby, the joy train and carousels await you to stop by for a fun ride.
The Rheinagau Musik Festival, established in 1988, is an international music festival that takes place in June. Classical music concerts are held at important cultural locations throughout the town, such as Eberbach Abbey and Schloss Johannisberg.

Moving to Aachen

Located in the western part of Germany, in North-Rhine Westphalia, the city of Aachen flourished economically over the years, thanks to its location in a coal-mining area.
The former capital of the Charlemagne’s Frankish empire is also known as ‘Bad Aachen’, with thousands of people enjoying the benefits of the local mineral waters every year.
Aachen’s economy is based on science, engineering and innovation. In 2009, the city was rated 8th among cities in Germany in this area. The RWTH Aachen University, one of the country’s top universities, is located in the city.
In 1372, the city of Aachen became the first coin-minting city in the world that used an Anno Domini date on a coin.
Opened in 1959, the Scotch Club was the first discotheque in Aachen, with Klaus Quirini as the first DJ.
The ‘Printen’ is a local specialty of sweet bread, which, unlike gingerbread, is sweeten with sugar. However, the original recipe is no longer used, that’s why the new ‘Printen’ has another taste.
The main attraction of the city is the Aachen Cathedral. Erected in 796 AD on Charlemagne’s orders, was the largest cathedral in northern Europe. 30 German kings and 12 queens were crowned in this cathedral between 936 until 1531. The remains of Charlemagne can be seen inside the church’s walls. Its original form is lost in the mists of history, due to several extensions and renovations, which gave the Cathedral an eclectic, rather interesting style.
Dating from 1330, the city hall is an imposing building located nearby the market and the cathedral. The city hall’s attractions are the coronation hall and the emperors’ hall, beautifully decorated with scenes from the life of Charlemagne (also known as Charles the Great) as well as the legendary king’s signature.

Moving to Poitou-Charentes

Poitou-Charentes, a frontier region in south-western France, is a very young province, established in 1956 and encompassing most of the former Poitou area, plus some smaller territories from the south. Some consider it the land of Cognac, as it is the southern part of this region that provides optimal conditions for the cultivation of the exact type of grapes required for the production of this fine, savoury spirit. No less famous is the Marais Poitevin, a sizeable wetland dubbed the “Green Venice” of France, or the Futuroscope in Poitiers, one of the largest leisure parks in France. It is bordered by Pays de la Loire to the north, Centre and Limousin to the east, Aquitaine to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
Poitou-Charentes is thought to be the region that had the highest contribution to the settlement of North America by the French, as it was mainly immigrants from this part of France that founded what is now New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec or Newfoundland, amongst others. The process of colonization took place during the XVII and XVIII century, even though the year 1755 brought a massive expulsion of the French by the British, who pushed them northwards.
Poitou-Charentes, which spans over the central part of the Atlantic coastal plan, continued inland with an area of gentle hills, is centred on the ancient city of Poitiers, which still stands as its capital, and is further organized into four departments: Charente, renowned for the butter and the Pineaufortified wine manufactured here, but especially for the Cognac; Charente-Maritime, which includes the town of Rochefort, one of France’s critical naval bases; Deux-Sèvres, named after the two rivers that have their origins here, SèvreNantaise and SèvreNiortaise; and Vienne, home to the capital, Poitiers, as well as to a XI century Romanesque church, the Abbey Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Not the least important of the attractions in Poitou-Charentes is the Marais Poitevin, an extended marshland that constitutes a choice destination for bird-watching or general outdoor adventures, or provides tourists with numerous other options of spending their free time, from guided tours in boats or horse-drawn carriages to canoeing, hiking or cycling.

Moving to Rhône-Alpes

Rhône-Alpes is one of the border regions of France, located in the south-eastern part of the country, and taking its name from the two geographical landmarks in the region, the river Rhône and the magnificent Alps mountain range. Its French neighbours are the regions Bourgogne, Franche-Comté, Auvergne, Languedoc-Roussillon, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The eastern border with Italy and Switzerland is marked by the west end of the Alps, a part that also includes their highest peak, the Mont Blanc.
By far the most important city in this region is Lyon, second only to Paris in terms of size and population. In fact, Lyon, along with other two major cities in this region, Grenoble and Saint-Étienne, is one of the economic hearts of the region, concentrating upwards of 1.5 million people in the city itself and surrounding satellite towns. Another city worthy of note is Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, a choice tourist resort since the beginning of the XX century.
The Rhône-Alpes region, one of high logistic and economic importance for France – actually ranking sixth in terms of economic development amongst all the other European regions- is subdivided into eight departments: Ain, a major transit area for national and international commodities; Ardèche, corresponding to the former province of Vivarais; Drôme, part of the former province of Dauphiné and home to the infamous courtesan Diane de Poitiers; Isère, which bears the same name as the French ship used for transporting the Statue of Liberty across the Atlantic; Loire, crossed from north to south by the homonym river; Rhône, situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers; Savoie, boasting the deepest lake located entirely on the territory of France, namely Lac du Bourget; and Haute-Savoie, host of the first Winter Olympic Games, held here in 1924 in Chamonix.
The Rhône-Alpes region has a thriving economic life, relying partly on agriculture, partly on a great diversity of industries, and partly on tourism. People come here to enjoy the breath-taking sceneries, to ski, to hike, to visit cultural landmarks such as Grenoble, Saint-Étienne, Lyon– a UNESCO world heritage site, to study at the renowned universities of Lyon or Grenoble, or to savour the fine French cuisine and equally fine wines that are so well represented here.

Removals to France - Removals to Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur - Removals Companies London UK

Moving to Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur

The French region known today as Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is actually a direct successor of the historical province of Provence, but also incorporates several smaller units, which are as follows: Avignon, once a papal territory; the county of Nice, famous for its coastline, the Côte d’Azur or French Riviera; and the Alpine part of the Dauphiné province. It is situated in the south-eastern corner of France, neighbouring Italy, the Mediterranean Sea, the small state of Monaco, and the provinces of Rhône-Alpes and Languedoc-Roussillon.
The region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is further organized into six departments, some of them quite fragmented themselves. For instance, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department is a rather mountainous one, with steep slopes and deep valleys and most of its population concentrated on the one third of its territory that is made up of gentler plateaux and hills.
The Hautes-Alpes, encompassing the north of Provence and southeast of Dauphiné, is one of the original 83 departments established during the 1790 French Revolution and is famous, amongst others, for having the largest artificial lake in Europe, Lac de Serre-Ponçon.
The Alpes-Maritimes department is a place of contrasts, bringing together breathtaking landscapes of high mountains with the lively atmosphere of urban agglomerations on the Mediterranean coastline. Also contrasting is the climate: this department boasts an average of 300 sunny days per year, matched by no less than 70 to 110 stormy days per year, which is quite an attractive mix for tourists.
The Bouches-du-Rhône department is the one with the highest population density, with as many as 2 million people living in Marseille and surrounding urban area. The city of Marseille, capital to the entire region, constitutes the largest industrial and commercial harbour in France. One of the cities in this department, Salon-de-Provence, is also renowned as the home town of the highly notorious Nostradamus.
The Var department is no less impressive, as it is known as home to the principal port of the French Navy, Toulouse, a series of enchanting beach resorts (Saint Tropez included), various superbly crafted religious edifices of Romanesque and medieval inspiration, as well as heady, delicious wines. Last but not least, the Vaucluse department displays a unique karst scenery, the main attraction being the karst spring Fontaine de Vaucluse, located in a valley that is literally closed at one end by a towering cliff face.

Moving to Réunion

The French island of Réunion is an exotic place located in the Indian Ocean, providing a rather isolated home to its approximately 800,000 inhabitants, as the closest neighbours are Mauritius, which is about 200 kilometres away, and Madagascar, some 900 kilometres away. Still, despite its location, it constitutes one of the 27 regions of France and, as such, has the same administrative status as continental provinces, with French established as the only official language.
The population of this island is a very heterogeneous mix of ethnicities, made up mainly of the descendants of the immigrants who came here literally from all corners of the world. Consequently, ethnic groups with significant representation include people from Africa, India, Europe, China, and even Arab countries. It’s worth mentioning that the settlement of this island – a process that started at the beginning of the XVI century with the arrival of Portuguese explorers – was one of those rare cases in history where the newcomers didn’t displace, replace or destroy the native inhabitants, as the island was, reportedly, deserted at that time. Apparently, the Portuguese didn’t find it very welcoming either, as they left it for good some one hundred years later, and by the second half of the XVII century it was already being colonized by the French, albeit with convicts. Official colonization began in 1665 and was pioneered by the French East India Company.
The landscape of Réunion is considered somewhat similar to that of the Hawaii Island, as both are located on top of hotspots, particular points of the Earth’s crust in which the magma is closer to the surface. It has two impressive volcanoes, an extinct one, Piton des Neiges, and a very active one, Piton de la Fournaise, which most recently erupted in January 2010. Another spectacular feature of the scenery are the three calderas: Cirque de Salazie, situated north-east of Piton des Neiges, Cirque de Cilaos, hosting a community that has earned wide appreciation for the local embroidery, and Cirque de Mafate, remote and very inaccessible.
Most of the island’s economy relies on the little agriculture that is concentrated on the lower coastline lands. The administrative capital, Saint-Denis, a 150,000 people city, is also located close to the shore, almost at the mouth of Rivière Saint-Denis. It boasts art galleries, public gardens, and a seafront park.

Moving to Picardy

Picardy, one of the northern regions of France, could be dubbed the “province that almost lost it”, as it came really close to losing its status as administrative unit back in 2009, following a proposed regionalisation reform. It was only due to the vehement opposition of its inhabitants that it managed to keep its status quo. One that was associated with a rather well established heritage of traditions and cultural assets, such as superb places of worship of Gothic inspiration, gourmet food and beer, even music, dancing and sports.
The province of Picardy is further subdivided into three departments: Somme, the capital of which, Amiens, also serves as capital to the region, Oise, and Laon. Most of what is today the Oise department wasn’t really a historical part of Picardy, but rather a XX century addition made when the province was formally established.
The location of Picardy at the very core of western Europe made it the perfect midway point between such early metropolises as London, Amsterdam or Paris, and, as such, has had more than its share of being the subject of heated disputes. The British, the Habsburgs, the Spanish, and the French all took turns, within the last ten hundred years, in claiming ownership over various parts of modern-era Picardy. Which, naturally, resulted in the area becoming the scene to numerous bloody battles, such as the two most often mentioned by historians, the battle of Crécy in 1346 and the equally infamous one of Somme more than five hundred years later.
However, despite the wars, Picardy turned out to be quite wealthy thanks to the high productivity of its farms, benefiting from fertile soil on a flat landscape. This, in turn, resulted in prosperous residents coming together in urban settlements that became the towns and cities of today. Not surprising for a time when religion played a major role in people’s lives, a significant amount of this wealth was invested in the building of beautiful churches, cathedrals, and basilicas that have survived to this day and which, along with the picturesque red brick houses in the rural regions, attract visitors from all corners of the world.

Luxembourg Ranks Third for Quality of Life

So what are you waiting for? It was recently hailed as a top financial emerging market by Geneva-based Middle Eastern business, Pictet’s, and Luxembourg also enjoyed the accolade of coming 3rd in 2012 quality of life study carried out by ECA International. The study ranked cities around the world in terms of their quality of life for ex pats. The capital city of Luxembourg –  Luxembourg – rose one place from 2011-2012, only falling behind joint 1st place-ranked Copenhagen and Berne.

The study was compiled using independent surveys and ratings submitted by ex pats in relation to European standards and adjustments, e.g. where can a European feel most at home? Ranking was decided based on scores from categories like social life, leisure, infrastructure, political tension, climate, healthcare services, accommodation, utilities, transport, location, personal safety and culture.

But how do you rank a city for it’s liveability in terms of foreigners residing there in a broader sense? For us, the proof is in the figures. Removals to Luxembourg are exceptionally popular in the current market, especially in terms of relocation for professional reasons. The ECA study also cited Luxembourg as a top business destination. It scored very high in terms of HR considerations like ex pat comfort, familiar resources and all-round ease settling into the new environment. It also took into account things like the origin of the ex pat and their ease settling into the candidate city. This information was then used to score cities on their overall appeal and quality of life.

Want a few more high ranking cities to add to the list? Removals to Germany and surrounding areas are pretty popular; the top ranking cities following Luxembourg are, in  order, Stuttgart, Antwerp, Geneva, Brussels and Dusseldorf.

Something we see a lot in our removals packing services business is people taking a chance. It could be a move to Luxembourg for work, it could be a year studying in Florence or an early retirement on the Riviera. The bottom line is that the world is a large and splendid place. And with us behind you, you could see a little more of it with your own stuff comfortably around you.

And if you need a little push to head out to Luxembourg to enjoy it’s high ranking quality of life, here are a few facts we found to sugar coat the move!

^Several parts of the city of Luxembourg are labelled as UNSECO World Heritage Sites.
^Luxembourgish is the native language and not just a dialect of German.
^Luxembourg has been noted as one of the safest countries in the world on numerous occasions.
^Luxembourgers love to finish a meal with a very strong plum-based drink, eau-de-vie.
^Luxembourg Euros are amongst the rarest in circulation, so keep hold of any you come across and pass them on to a coin collector.
^Most Luxembourgers are fluent in French, German and English.
