Over the years, major cultural figures like composers Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schuman or poet Heinrich Heine have tied their name to the city of Dusseldorf. To this day, the town is known for its thriving culture, spurred by institutions such as the Kunstakademie, a fine arts academy where many prominent German visual artists have worked and studied. Other major cultural venues are the North Rhine-Westphalia state art collection, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein opera, and the Düsseldorfer theater. The city is also home to a vibrant musical scene, with the electronic genre being represented by artists like Kraftwerk.
Every year, close to five million people visit Düsseldorf to attend the July funfair, the largest and most attractive of the traditional Rhenish Carnival celebrations. Contributing to the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the city is the relatively numerous Japanese community and the visitors attending the many trade shows organized in the city. One in five of the world’s trade shows are held at Düsseldorf’s Messe venue.
As most Germans, the residents of Düsseldorf love beer, and the city has its own specialty of beer called “altbier”, crafted with traditional methods and recipes. Several popular pubs in the city make and serve this speciality on the spot.
