On Your Bike

There are many things that Holland is famous for – tulips, clogs, and windmills to name a few, but there is perhaps one thing that has a larger impact on the country and that is that it is very flat. As a consequence of this the Dutch make a large use of bicycles for transport and are probably the largest user of this form of transport in Europe. So if you are considering moving to Holland do not forget to take one.

Unlike most towns in the UK, Dutch towns and roads are designed for the bicycle. For example Amsterdam’s central railway station has parking for over 8,000 bicycles allowing commuters to leave them over night. Also a lot of the roads are specially adapted for bicycles with special lanes solely for their use and special traffic signals at road junctions.

And do not think that this is just for leisure purposes. In Dutch cities you are just as likely to find men in suits and ladies in heels riding bikes as people wearing tracksuits. Also the Dutch can be very adept at balancing large loads such as shopping bags on their bikes.

So moving to Holland can give you that excuse for getting fit by riding a bike. It will also help with your carbon footprint as of course bicycles are perhaps the greenest for of vehicle transport there is.

We at European Removal Experts can provide relocation services from the UK if you are moving to Holland and we are happy to take bicycles. We can even arrange part load delivery for you if you should forget it.

Alternatively you could buy one locally because of course there are also many bike shops to cater for them. They are not particularly expensive so you won’t have to ‘go Dutch’ to get one for all the family.

Moving to Arnhem

Arnhem is one of the largest cities in the eastern half of Netherlands, also serving, from an administrative point of view, as capital to the history-laden province of Gelderland. Its history was one of fast and impressive development, partly due to the fact that it has two rivers crossing through it: Nederrijn and Sint-Jansbeek. The population itself contributed to said development and the numbers didn’t lag behind, so that, today, the city counts about 150,000 inhabitants, according to a January-1st-2012 estimate. That number, though, accounts for less than a quarter of the total number of residents in the metropolitan area Arnhem-Nijmegen that the city of Arnhem is part of.
And speaking of history-laden places, the city of Arnhem, first recorded as early as 893 under such names as Arneym or Arentheym, is certainly no stranger to them. With traces of human inhabitation going back in time even further, it would be safe to say the city is actually of ancient origins, or even older, considering that the most impressive archaeological finds date from the stone age, making what is today Arnhem the likely residence of Neanderthal humans.
And from that point onward the history of the town has had many episodes worth mentioning, starting with its establishment as a full-fledged city, back in 1233 and ending with the famous battle of Arnhem in September 1944. Said battle is a landmark of both the city’s history and its culture, as, in addition to being officially commemorated every year on September 17th, it was also skilfully dramatized in the highly-acclaimed, award-winning 1977 film A Bridge Too Far.
Still, history is by no means the only point of attraction in this charming town turned glamorous city. As early as the XIX century, Arnhem had earned the reputation of a peaceful, quiet, and altogether idyllic place of retirement or holiday, appropriately dubbed “The Little Hague of the East”. In addition to its regular population, the place was also home to rich people, most of which had earned their fortunes either from trading sugar or from having had plantations in the Indies. When such people decided to make Arnhem their home, naturally they contributed to its development and prosperity, visible even today in such contrasting aspects as the abundance of parks and green areas versus the pronounced urbanization of its northern part, a feat that is rather rare in the Netherlands.
Similar contrasts also occur with the most important tourist attractions in the town. Some of them are vestiges of the city’s history and have retained only some of their former glory, whereas others are displays of an open-minded attitude combining with state-of-the-art technology. The former includes the XVI century St Eusebius church and the house of Maarten van Rossum, currently serving as town hall. The later category boasts such items as the Netherlands Open Air Museum, the Burgers’ Zoo, and the Gelredome, a football stadium that ended up serving as a model for other cities too, both in Europe and the US.
Thinking of moving to Arnhem? Don’t hesitate any more! We can help!

There are several things that are unique to Tilburg, such as the Schrobbeler liquor which is locally manufactured and which has as a trademark a relatively sweet flavour although its alcohol percentage is of 21.5%. This beverage even has its own glass, which is larger than a Jägermeister glass and it’s sold in a stone jar and it is usually drank cold. Another well-known alcoholic drink that is typical of Tilburg is Peerke’s Nat which is actually stronger than Schrobbeler and is sold in bottles of 70 centiliters.
Tilburg also has its own trappist beer that is brewed at the Koningshoeven Brewery. This brewery has been founded in 1884 and it is the only one to brew this type of beer specific to Tilburg.
The Tilburg municipality has a higher cultural standing every year and over time the city has built some rather famous buildings that are used regularly.
One of the best profs that Tilbury has a high cultural degree is the number of open air art present in the city. One of the most famous example is the turning house that is located on the Hasseltrotonde, which was erected in 2008 on the roundabout. There is also the Art in the Open space Tilburg which is responsible for modern art but also gives information regarding older work of arts such as the statue on the Heuvel.
In the municipality of Tilburg, there are many festivals that take place on a regular basis, such as the Festival Mundial, the Incubate and the Roadburn Festival among others.  There are also numerous famous locations where starts like Nick Cave and GZA performed, and even a place where experimental jazz and improvised music can be found. Related to the Fontys University of Applied Sciences there is a pop-academy where the students that attend often perform on local stages.
Along with the many locations where people can have fun and express themselves, there are also outstanding museums such as the museum of Modern Art – De Pont Foundation and the Noordbrabants Natuurmuseum and lots of parks and forests where people can enjoy some recreational time together with their loved ones. Such parks as the Leijpark and the Reeshofpark which are the largest among Tilburgs are not just famous for their beautiful views and pleasant atmosphere but also for the events that happen there, such as the Festival Mundial which takes place in the Leijpark.
There are many things to see and to experiment in Tilburg and it is up to you to do it. Don’t let hesitation and fear of the unknown stop you from moving to Tilburg. Read about the city and stay informed, then when you’re ready to move we can help you do it.

Removals to Eindhoven - Removals to Holland from UK

Moving to Eindhoven

In the province of North Brabant a city called Eindhoven is located, in the southern Netherlands. The city was originally centred at the joining point of the streams Gender and Dommel. Later on, in 1950, the Gender stream was dammed, leaving only Dommel still free to run through the city centre. Together with Veldhoven that is adjacent to the city, Eindhoven reaches a sum of 260,000 inhabitants more or less, which ranks the city as the fifth largest one in the Netherlands and is ranked as the first largest in North Brabant.
There are several neighbouring towns and cities which you must be aware of if you’re ever in Eindhoven, such as Geldrop-Mierlo, Heeze-Leende, Nuenen, Eersel, Oirschot and Best. The metropolitan area’s number of inhabitants reaches to almost 750,000, this including Helmond, and Eindhoven is also part of the metropolitan area of Brabant Stad that has a number of inhabitants of over 2 million. The town was nicknamed as the world’s most intelligent community back in 2011 by the Intelligent Community Forum.
From a cultural and recreational part of view, it can be said that Eindhoven is based on two major forces; that of being a major university city and because the town was home to the main location of the Philips company. This together contributed to the growth of Eindhoven and made the town stand out numerous times.
Because Eindhoven is such an important university city, a large number of its inhabitants are students and young people. The people from the Eindhoven University of Technology and several other undergraduate schools always keep a high supply of young inhabitants which in turn have needs who need to be catered to by things such as festivals or clubs. These activities in turn generate a youthful energy and contribute to the development of Eindhoven.
Another important part of Eindhoven is the fact that Philips main company was located in the city for a long time and it contributed greatly for the cultural development of the city. The Philips company offered their workforce cultural institutions along with sporting institutions that can cater to both mind and boy. Some of the cultural institution that the Philips company was founder of were the Muziekcentrum Fritz Philips and the former POC; while regarding the sport institution, Philips founded several out of which the most famous one being Philips Sport Vereniging which was also abbreviated as PSV.
As a result of the influence the Philips company had in Eindhoven, the city is sometimes called as the City of Light due to the projects the company developed that involved lightning up the city buildings. There is even a festival during the Carnaval which is called Lampegate or Hamlet of Lamps, which can also be interpreted in an ironical way for the purpose of the carnival as Hole in the grounds with lamps. This has also been influence by the activity of the Philips company in Eindhoven and it actually refers to its importance in the Eindhoven community.
Although there are numerous other cultural institution that are around and in the city, the two mentioned before had such a big influence over the development of the town that the others have a hard time comparing to them. Nevertheless there are some famous museums which can be found here such as the Centrum Kunstlicht in de Kunst and large public places which are used for open air art such as the Stadswandelpark that has more than 30 modern art pieces.
Even for recreational purposes the Eindhoven has a rather large scene which includes the bars on the Market square or the two cinemas that are located in the centre of the town, namely the Pathe Eindhoven and the Servicebioscoop Zien.
There are several regular festivals that take place in Eindhoven and that offer entertainment for the inhabitants along with the visitors, young and old, while raising the points of culture throughout the year. Such festivals are the Carnaval, the Koninginneddag which is a national holiday or the Marathon Eindhoven which commemorates the liberation of the Eindhoven along with many others that make the city a wonderful place to live in. The time for hesitating has past, now is the time to take action and move to the place of your dreams, move to Eindhoven. Don’t worry about all that packing, we can manage that and we’ll help with all your move so you can just go ahead and enjoy the colourful and youthful life Eindhoven has to offer.

Removals to Utrecht - Removals to Holland from UK

Moving to Utrecht

The most populous city in the Dutch province of Utrecht is the municipality Utrecht. The city is also the capital of the province and it is situated in the eastern corner of the conurbation known under the name of Randstad. Utrecht is ranked fourth in Netherlands by its size and has a population of around 320,000 inhabitants.

The architecture that you can find in Utrecht has some features dating from the Early Middle Ages; examples of such are some of the buildings that can be found in the ancient city centre.  The town is also known to be Netherlands religious centre since way back in the 8th century. Even today the city called Utrecht is where the seat of the Archbishop of Utrecht is, and also the seat of the titular head of the Union of Utrecht, meaning that of the archbishop of the Old Catholic church.  In Utrecht you can also find some offices pertaining to the main Protestant church.  Back in the days the Utrecht was considered to be the most important city in Netherlands and this was so until the start of the Dutch Golden Age. Later on Amsterdam became the city which was most populated and a cultural centre which made out of Utrecht a less important city.

The city is also home to the Utrecht University which is famous for being the largest one in Netherlands and together with this, Utrecht also has several other important institutions for higher education. Utrecht is an important transport hub for Netherlands because of its central position in the country, the city has an important role in both road and rail transport within Netherlands. Another trait of Utrecht for which the city is quite well known is the cultural events that take place regularly, having a large number of participant every time, comparable to those in Amsterdam.

One of the features of the town architectural and religious inheritance is the Dom Tower which appertains to the Dom Church, the former cathedral. The Dom Tower is one of the tallest constructions in Utrecht at the moment reaching up to a height of 112 metres. Another tall construction that provides a breath-taking view of the Utrecht skyline is the Robobank-tower which has a height of 105 metres that is without the two antennas that make the total height of 120 metres. There are also some other high structures that contribute to the city’s skyline in a flattering way, such as the Apollo Residence which has a height of 64 metres and the Kantoortoren Galghenwert which is around 85 metres tall.

The city also has a very important landmark, which is the old centre of the town and the canal which can be found in the inner city. The canal has a curved shape and it follows an old arm of the Rhine for a portion of the way. The canal is quite famous, it’s called Oudegracht and it is lined with wharf-basement structures which are unique for this city, together they form a two-level street which runs across the canal. In the inner city you can see the old medieval structure is still preserved which only adds to the historic atmosphere the town exudes. There is also a medieval moat that encircles the old town and which is mostly still intact. Because Utrecht was a fortified city in the past, part of the city remained in a compact formation. There is a circle that surrounds the medieval core and which displays constructions from the late 19th to the 20th century while forming neighbourhoods which are spread farther out, leaving the eastern part of the city quite open.

There are also several significant churches that got preserved over time such as the famous Dom Church, the St. Peter’s Church and St. John’s church, out of which the last two present a Romanesque architecture that was quite well preserved. Also there are some gothic churches still present in the scenery of the Utrecht such as St. Nicholas and St. James.

Due to its rich cultural scene that Utrecht provides for its inhabitants and visitors along with the many festivals and sight that can be enjoyed at all time of the year, the city Utrecht is one of the choices that stay up top on the list when it comes to moving to the Netherlands. Holland has many beautiful and interesting cities and each has its own charm but one of the most loved and cherished location is Utrecht. So if you decide to move to Utrecht we can help take care of everything you need.

Removals to the Hague - Removals to Holland from UK

Moving to The Hague

The capital city of the province South Holland is called The Hague. Its inhabitants go over 500, 000 and even more in the suburbs. It is ranked third as size, only after Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The city is located to the west of the Netherlands and it is known to be the centre of the Haaglanden conurbation. The Hague is also located in the southwest corner of an even larger conurbation called Randstad.
This is the city where the seat of the Dutch government is and of the parliament. Also here is where the Council of State and the Supreme Court are. Despite being such an obviously important place for politics, it is not the capital of the Netherlands. Even King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands together with Queen Maxima lives at Huis ten Bosch which is the royal palace in The Hague and does his work at the Noordeinde Palace.
There are multiple foreign embassies that are present in the city and around 150 international organisations have made The Hague their home, such as the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. As a result of the multiple organisations and the political influence The Hague has, both in Netherlands and internationally, has made the city an important location for hosting the United Nations and The Hague has become as significant to outside relations as much as other major cities are, such as Tokyo, Vienna, Geneva or New York.
The city life can be mainly found around the Binnenhof and the Hofvijver and that is also where the Parliament is located. The Hague historical inner city has originality in various aspects and it has some different characteristics than the other nearby cities like Delft and Leiden. Unlike those small cities whose streets of the inner centre are cramped and bordered by walls and canals, The Hague has small streets in the city centre that are said to date back to the Middle Ages and some grandiose and magnificent residences built in the 18th-century that were used for diplomats and other important Dutch families. The Hague has a City Hall which is well-known for its impressive build that dates back to the 16th century and a large church from the 15th century, along with several palaces dating back to the 17 century and a Protestant church built around the same time. There are also various buildings that were built in the 18th century and that offer some beautiful scenery to all who pass by them. This contributes to the particular scenery the city has to offer to its inhabitants and visitors alike.
Even for the young generation, the city has various locations where students can hang out, such as the new campus that was built in 2012 of the Leiden University. There are also several major institutions that are important for the cultural part of the city and for the whole experience as a young student, such as the Leiden University College The Hague, The Royal Academy of Art or The Royal Conservatory of The Hague. The city has opportunities for advancement for both young and experienced people and is the perfect place to go to if your desire is to better yourself and to advance to the next stage in your career. As proof of that, there are also various foreign inhabitants who make the city The Hague very diverse from a cultural point of view and it offers multiple foreign shops along with pubs and several foreign cultural events.
The Hague also has two beautiful beach resorts that are always well taken care of. The beach resort called Scheveningen is quite large and is located in the north western part of the city. This beach resort is especially popular among the inhabitants of the city and also among the tourists that pass by. With millions of visitors annually, the beach resort is one of the most popular beach towns in that area, namely the area of Benelux. The other beach resort that is quite well known is in the south western part of The Hague and although it is smaller comparing to Scheveningen, it still attracts many inhabitants of the city due to the beautiful scenery it offers and the great services it provides to each and every one of them.
Another characteristic of the city is the streets found in the older parts of the town, which are wide and long ones, along with low-rise houses that are often found there.
Overall, the layout of The Hague is rather spacious which is something not often found in other Dutch cities and it has various green zones and parks created around natural streams, which make the city a wonderful green city which has a lot to offer to its inhabitants. The canals that can still be found in The Hague are just a few and most of them were already drained by the 19th century.
Moving to The Hague can be a wonderful experience for both you and your family. You can find more than just a political centre, there is always something that you can do to better yourself and you’ll also have a chance to spend some quality time with your family, admiring the nature and the many sightseeing locations that the town has to offer. So don’t hesitate anymore, be brave and make a change: Move to The Hague! Let yourself enjoy the many festivities, institutions and leisurely spend your time embracing the variety the city has to offer. Don’t worry about moving your furniture or belonging because it won’t take long. We can always help you move to The Hagen and we’ll also provide a free quote for you.

Removals to Rotterdam - Removals to Holland from UK

Moving to Rotterdam

The second largest city in the Netherlands is Rotterdam. The city is well known for its large ports that are ranked among the top in the world. The city is now a major international commercial centre and it all started when a dam was built back in 1270, on the Rotte River. The city is strategically placed at the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta on the North Sea. The location of the city is also where a major rail, road, inland and air waterway distribution system extends all the way through Europe. As a result of this, Rotterdam is also mentioned under the nickname “Gateway to Europe”.
Rotterdam is located in the province of South Holland, just in the western part of Holland. The city is well known for its architecture, cultural life, universities and the maritime heritage along with beautiful riverside setting.
A striking moment in history that made Rotterdam famous among all is the Rotterdam Blitz. The Rotterdam Blitz was the aerial bombing of the city in 1940, killing thousands. The bombing command was put under serious scrutiny and was a highly controversial matter because just before the bombing happened, negotiations took place and the decision to ceasefire was taken.
Rotterdam is known as having the largest port in Europe that was until 2004 the busiest port too until it got surpassed by Shanghai. The city bases its strategic and commercial importance on the location it occupies, being near the mouth of the New Meuse channel that leads directly into the centre of Europe.
Regarding the Rotterdam architecture, the city has several high-rise buildings that are defining of the city’s skyline. Such one building is the Witte Huis that was completed back in 1989 and reaches the high of 15 meters. Several other buildings were built in the early 20th century that adopted the modern style architecture, such as the clubhouse of the Royal Maas Yacht Club and the Feyenoord football stadium.
After the bombings took place in World War II, along with the lives lost then, many of the old buildings in the centre were destroyed. While rebuilding these, the centre of Rotterdam became a place where ambitious new architecture found its home.
Another famous architectural structure has been built by the architect Piet Blom back in 1984, namely the cube houses. Overall there are many famous architects that are bases in Rotterdam such as Erick van Egeraat and Neutelings & Riedijk.
In Rotterdam there are also several annual events that are only found in the city, such as the largest Caribbean carnival in Europe named the Zomercarnaval. Other examples of these events are the Bavaria City Race which is a formula 1 race that takes place inside the centre of the city or the World Port Days that is actually held in honour of the Port of Rotterdam and it takes place over the course of three whole days.
Rotterdam is also famous for being the home of the Erasmus University which concentrates its studies on education in management, economics and research. Several multinational firms surround the university that is located in the east of the city.
The city also has a strong cultural appeal and was once named as the European Capital of Culture back in 2001. Rotterdam has a grand orchestra named the Rotterdam Philharmonic and several theatres and movie theatres. There is also a major zoo located at the northwest of the city, named Diergaarde Blijdorp.
The city has several important museums that can be visited such as the Netherlands Architecture Institute and the Ethnographic Museum. There is also a historical shipyard and museum known as the Scheepwerf ‘De Delft’. Here you can visit the ship of the line Delft which was reconstructed and opened to the public.
There are various things to do in Rotterdam and many of which are well worth doing. Whatever you might desire to find there you will probably find it if you search a little. So don’t stay on ceremony and start a new stage of your life in Rotterdam. No matter what you have to move to be there, we can move it for you.
